Halloween & Algebra combined? Spice up solving quadratic equations practice with this Halloween –themed Encrypted Wall Activity. This self-checking, 9 quadratic equations, practice works well with factoring, the quadratic formula, or graphing. A variation designed for specific focus on the Zero Product Property is also included. All leading coefficients are equal to one, making this a nice entry-level independent practice.
Play a little music as students move around the room to solve 9 quadratic equation problems posted on the wall. Problems can be solved in any order (so problem sheets could easily be passed from desk to desk instead if that’s more your style). Each problem has an associated letter that students record next to the integer solutions on a specially set-up answer sheet. (Don’t worry; there are easy instructions!)
So where’s the magic? Correct solutions recorded on the student answer sheet spell out a Halloween message. Use the Encrypted version to make sure students aren’t just unscrambling letters (an easy introduction to cryptology). Once finished with the encrypted version, students decode to check the accuracy of their work before ever submitting for a grade.
