I constantly search for ways to both A) practice rote adding and subtraction for repeated exposure and B) let my 1st graders actually BE 1st graders and enjoy coloring/crafting. Because of this, I make these color by adding/subtracting papers to go along with holidays quite often.
Common core requires 1st grade to add/subtract up to 14. My sums here go up to 12. Students should first complete math problems and write sum with a pencil in space provided. After a teacher checks answers and student corrects incorrect sums, he/she uses the color chart to color accordingly. Remind students to color lightly over answers. Completed pictures are great to display for a little holiday cheer in the classroom or in the hallway, and the students always look forward to the coloring aspect. Meanwhile, it lets me know how we're doing with our basic adding skills based on how many corrections need made and how long it takes to complete this activity!
