Build your students’ understanding of main idea and details with these authentic, seasonal graphic organizers and writing activity.
- 4 costume graphic organizers (pirate, vampire, ladybug, and witch) with sentence frame. Students will complete the sentence frame to state the main idea of the costume, and draw or write 4 details that support the main idea. Example—Main idea: She is a ladybug. Her costume is red. It has black spots. She has wings. She is wearing antennae.
- Blank graphic organizers for students to write about their own costumes — one version with the sentence frame “I was a ______.” and one blank.
- Writing sheet for students to draw their costumes, write the main idea, and write sentences to describe their details.
Making Inferences Activity—Have students read their details aloud from their writing sheet, without stating their main idea or showing their illustration. Have other students make inferences to figure out the student’s costume (main idea). Engaging and authentic practice for partner work, small groups, or whole group!
