Description

This DIGITAL and PRINT Halloween Descriptive Writing Activity includes fun and academically challenging Halloween activities to help you celebrate Halloween with your middle school (grade 5 and up) students! Students will practice numerous writing skills with these activities, including establishing a point of view, using precise words, descriptive details, and sensory and figurative language to describe a character and/or object related to Halloween. Finally, students will create an illustration to accompany their description!

We suggest you mount students' final drafts (descriptive paragraph and illustration) on orange or Halloween-colored cardstock, and staple the paragraph on top of the illustration so other students can try to guess what object or character is being described in the paragraph! We also included a fun Bulletin Board Poster with the words "Haunting Descriptions," so you can create a spooky, Halloween bulletin board for your class!

INCLUDED IN THIS ACTIVITY:

- Instructions for Teacher: detailed instructions for the teacher, walking you through step-by-step how to use this resource in your classroom

- Descriptive Writing Handout: identifies qualities of excellent descriptive writing, provides examples of quality descriptive writing, and has students analyze the example to point of what makes that particular piece of writing successful (there are TWO different versions of this handout - one higher-level (grades 7-12) and one lower-level (grades 4-6), but either can be used across all grade levels depending on the ability of your students). Includes suggested answer keys.

- Point of View Handout: reviews first person, first person omniscient, third person, and third person omniscient point of view, providing definitions and examples to help students use one of these particular points of view

- Figurative Language Graphic Organizer: provides definitions and examples of simile, metaphor, and personification; students also brainstorm a list of various similes, metaphors, and personification that they can use in their descriptive writing

- Descriptive Writing Graphic Organizer: helps students organize physical features, setting, sensory details, figurative language, spooky Halloween words, and the point of view they will use for writing their descriptive paragraph

- Descriptive Writing Rough Draft: provides students with a strong example of descriptive writing about a pumpkin; a checklist for students to ensure they've included all elements required to meet the rubric criteria

- Halloween-Themed Lined Paper: for students to write their final draft on

- Halloween-Themed Illustration Page: for students to draw an image of their Halloween object or character.

- Rubric: the rubric assess students on the following elements: point of view, sensory details, physical description, figurative language, specific vocabulary, and mechanics.

- Bulletin Board Poster: "Haunting Descriptions" to be used to help you create a fun October, Halloween-themed bulletin board for your classroom!
