Math Centers

3D Ghosts – a differentiated shape spinner activity.
K.G.A.3

Version 1: Students use the spinner and a paper clip (or clear spinner) to spin. When the spinner stops, the student should name the 3D shape it lands on. Then, they should find a real life example of that shape on the recording sheet and color it. Continue until all shapes are colored. This version represents six shapes: cone, rectangular prism, pyramid, cylinder, sphere, and cube.

Version 2: This activity works the same, but only incorporates the four shapes: cone, rectangular prism, sphere, and cube.

Spider Count – a differentiated counting activity.
K.CC.A.3, K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5

Version 1: Students choose a spider web card and read the number. They count out the same number of spiders cards to add onto the web (you may choose to use small plastic spiders or spider rings instead). Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet and draw the same number of dots or “spiders” on the web.

Version 2: Students choose a spider web card and count how many spiders are on the web. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet and write how many (the numeral) spiders are on the web.

Spooky Measures – a differentiated measurement activity.
K.MD.1, K.MD.2

Version 1: Students choose a measurement card and count how many units tall the picture is. Then they match the number on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they color the correct number of units (so if candy corn is 4 units tall, that’s how many units are colored) and write the numeral in the small box.

Version 2: Students choose a measurement card and decide which object is shorter and which is taller. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they color the taller object green and the shorter object purple.

Tally Bones – a differentiated tally marks activity.
K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5

Version 1: Students choose a skeleton card and read the number. Once they know how many, they find the matching tally bones card. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they draw the correct number of tally marks.

Version 2: Students choose a skeleton card and read the number. Once they know how many, they use the bone cards (or Q-Tips) to build the correct number of tally marks. Then they match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. There they draw the correct number of tally marks.

Who Has More? – a differentiated comparing numbers activity.
K.CC.B.4, K.CC.B.5, K.CC.C.6

Version 1: Students choose a card and count the number of candy on it. They decide if the amount of candy is more or less than five. If it is more than five, they color the same costume kid on the recording sheet green. If it is less than five, they color the same costume kid on the recording sheet purple.

Version 2: Students choose a card and count both sets of candy on it. They decide which set is more and which set is less. On the recording sheet they find the set of costume kids and color the costume kid that has more green and the costume kid that has less purple.
