Google Slides presentation is a great way to get your students engaged in creative writing. The final slideshow can be turned into a digital book that you can embed on your class blog/website and/or emailed to parents. The slides are set to print on 8.5x11 paper for you to print and bind together if you would rather have a hard copy.
Each slide contains directions in the comments.
Assign each student a slide. They can either add a photo of their Halloween costume (you would need parents to send them to you digitally and then you would need to disperse to students via a Google folder, Dropbox, a server, etc.) OR they can use the built in search feature to find a copyright free image that represents their costume. Students will then type their writing piece about their Halloween costume. Some ideas include:
•Writing Word Choice
: Have students use descriptive words to write a paragraph describing their costume.
: Have students write a paragraph describing their costume without mentioning the name of their costume. Have students add a solid shape over their photo by using the shape tool. Then add an animation to reveal the image when the slideshow is in presentation mode and you click. (Directions included)
: Have students write a limerick, haiku, sonnet, etc. about their costume.
•Other ideas that are included
Three pages are included for the teacher that contain:
•directions for adding an image
•how to embed slideshow on blog/website
•different ideas for how you can use this product
Digital writing is wonderful for a variety of reasons.
First, teachers don't have to cart a class set of journals back and forth from school to home. Instead, sign into your Google account and read from anywhere, even when you are on the go! Another great reason is that you can comment on students' writing without "marking up" their paper. I like for students to engage in digital writing because they can color code specific words by changing the color of font. Ex. Descriptive words=red, Verbs=green, Vocabulary Words=blue. This is a great visual for the editing process. Students can quickly and easily edit their writing without having to rewrite their entire paper.
This product comes as a link in a PDF file. First, make sure you are signed into your Google account. Click on the link and you will be prompted to "Make a Copy". Rename the file to whatever you would like. It will be sent directly to your drive! Disperse to your students via Google Classroom, Google Drive Shared folder, your Learning Platform, etc..
Since this product is intended to be a collaborative presentation, students will need to access the SAME link and not make a copy. However, if you would rather them work on their own, delete the extra slides and distribute however you wish!
I know some schools have rules about not using the word "Halloween". That word does not appear anywhere on the title slide or student slides
