Coloring by sight words is a fun way to grow kindergarten students’ knowledge base of vocabulary words.
The color-by-sight-word printables in this packet are aligned to vocabulary words in Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Journeys reading series, kindergarten level, Units 1, 2 and 3. Dolch sight words are included.
Color word reference sheets are also included for student use. Students may use them as a reference guide when completing the printables in an ELA literacy work/learning center, at their seats working independently, or at home for a homework assignment.
You may want to print out and laminate more color reference sheets than you will need. When you send home the color word reference sheets for those students who need them, if you use these printables as homework assignments, some invariably become lost or misplaced or even chewed up by a labradoodle named Jennie.
Laminating a set – especially double laminating - lasts many months and stands up to rough handling. When my students used a color word reference sheet as they worked independently to complete a color-by-sight-word activity, they learned their color words faster.
Emergent learners are targeted for this kindergarten sight word activity. However, the printables are differentiated to three skill levels: struggling readers, on level readers, and above level readers.
The following Journeys Units 1 and 2 sight words are listed below:
Journeys Unit 1: I, like, the, and
Journeys Unit 2: see, we, to, a
Journeys Unit 3: come, me, with, my, you, what, are, now
