This “Haunted” Halloween story is a fun way to motivate students to write a creative Halloween tale. The handout serves as a writing template and the motivator is when you (and the class) add sound effects (as outlined in parenthesis). The teacher should first model a completed story by adding the “sound effects” as she/he reads it. Then give the students copies of the story template and have them fill-in their individualized stories. After they have completed their stories, have your students come to the front of the classroom and present their stories while you and the class help add noises and sounds for the effects.
[Allow the sound effects to finish before your student speaks her/his part. It might also be a good time to remind students that the “sound effects” should not get too outrageously loud! With this in mind, it is a fun Halloween writing activity.]
Additionally, if you record their stories on an audio recorder or video cam you can either email or give CDs of these to your students, in this case, your students will have a lasting memory of their Halloween tale that they can share at home with their family.
