This is a very fun unit that includes Latin roots and derivatives for "scary" vocabulary (words such as fear and warn are taught and reviewed), Ancient Roman and Greek Mythological Monsters powerpoint, group activity, and project. If this whole unit is used in a classroom there will be small and large group discussion, presentations, as well as synthesis of common word roots and derivatives. This is absolutely one of my favorite units I use in my classroom. It is a really fun way to teach Mythology that students will enjoy because it is also applicable to the time of the year. The group project is very hands on and creative for students who want to stretch their abilities. The vocabulary part could be used as a bell ringer in a high school Latin, English, or Language Arts classroom. The mythology project could be used in any class that studies the history, culture and thus mythology of ancient Rome or Greece (you would have to further the connections between culture and history by discussing attitudes towards monsters and everyday life etc. . . ) or in a Latin classroom. If you want to teach mythological monsters, this is the way to do it- in a halloween unit.
