In this activity, each letter of the alphabet is assigned a certain value. Students are given a Halloween related word, and need to either add, subtract, or multiply the values of each letter to find the total value of the word.
There are 4 addition problems, 3 subtraction problems, and 3 multiplication problems, along with a challenge problem. An answer key is included.
This lesson is easily adaptable for struggling or gifted learners. For example, students can add, subtract, or multiply the values of entire words. They can try to create words with the greatest value, or lowest value, or even try to create an exact value like -13.
It's a fun way to practice the integer rules for students in middle and high school.
