This is an activity that I designed for my 2nd grade honors class. This is a fun activity to do on that day that they’re anxious about trick-or-treating but we need to do some math! At this point in the year we have covered EnVision Topics 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 17 – this project reviews the skills that we have learned:
• comparing numbers
• place value of 2 and 3 digit numbers
• adding tens and hundreds
• number riddles
Students start with a bag of candy (we will use fun size skittles). They use the colors of their candy to answer different questions and receive an amount of money. They go shopping to get their house ready with treats, decorations and something to wear. Then they go to a haunted house where they have to answer riddles to get from one room to another. After they are out of the haunted house they visit other neighbors' homes. Finally they go home and sort the treats they got and compare the different candies.
Our class will complete this as an independent activity but you could use it for centers, early finishers, your high students, an extra credit opportunity or mid-semester review!
