This Halloween STEM Relay is based upon mostly fourth and fifth grade common core standards, with a few more challenging problems included, but can be used to enrich younger grades, or challenge students who are struggling in older grades. I used this with my 6th graders and it was such a fun activity for them. (Check out the preview to see some of the problems!)
The task of this activity is that it is just before Halloween and Gwennie the Ghost needs help trying to find the haunted mansion. After students solve all of the task cards to find the haunted mansion, they will then be given the supplies to build their own haunted mansion. This activity will promote communication, cooperation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Today you are going to be split up into groups of 3-4 students. Each group is going to start with task card and recording sheet number one.
As a group, you are going to read task card number one and solve the problem on your recording sheet as fast as you can. Once you have solved the task, and shown your work on your recording sheet, one person is going to bring just the recording sheet to me to have it checked. If your answer if correct, you will get task card and recording sheet number two. Each time you will get to keep your task cards so that you can refer back to them if needed. If your answer is incorrect, you will be sent back to your group to rework your answer. If it very important that you show your work so that we know you’re not just guessing.
Once you have solved all ten task cards correctly, you will be given your supplies to build a haunted mansion. The goal is so build the biggest and strongest mansion possible.
If you’re ready, I will give each group task card number one and recording sheet number one. It’s very important that you keep it upside down until I get done reading the HELP page. As soon as I read the last line, you may flip your task card over and begin working.
Are you ready?
