This is a problem based learning activity where students apply their knowledge of nonstandard units of measure to solve a mystery. They are presented with discovering who stole the candy from the haunted mansion. The only additional material you will need for this game is 1 inch paperclips. Other than that, you print and have a 45 minute whole group activity ready, or small group lesson.
Students will be given 5 pieces of evidence that they are required to measure. When they have all the measurements, they will use the measurements to discover which character stole the candy. They will use reasoning skills to help them determine which suspects to eliminate along the way.
This is great practice for teaching students that when measuring you must use the same units of measurement, start at the beginning, leave no gaps and no overlaps until the end.
