Solving math word problems is more fun when there is a spooky twist, timed for Halloween.
There are 20 word problems, predominantly focusing on multiplication skills with 1 digit x 1 digit and 2 digit x 1 digit. There is some addition included with critical thinking scenarios also. There are also blank task cards, where the children are asked to create their own word problem, solve it and then pass it on to someone else to find the answer.
The problems require the children to solve the equations mathematically but also to be able to explain their answer, and so insists that there must be the ability to verbalise the concepts involved. This is a great way to have the children reflect upon their own learning and understanding of the concepts taught within these math strands and standards.
This 10 page packet can simply be printed and put to great use as a review, homework practice or laminated and used as math centres task cards. An answer sheet is provided.
For guided groups, I like to have the children glue the photocopied sheet into their notebooks with space to really reflect upon their answers and write their explanation below the problem.
If you like these holiday activities, you will find many more holiday ideas for math and literacy in my stores.
