This is a Halloween-themed parts of speech word sort and mini-writing activity. I created this with third and fourth graders in mind. Students sort the Halloween-related words into four categories: verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs. Then, they complete the recording page, along with a mini-writing task, where students are asked to write a compound sentence using at least four of the words from their activity.
There are mini-posters (8.5 in by 11 in) that provide descriptions of each of the four parts of speech in kid-friendly language, along with a chart that explains how to write a compound sentence. This center looks really great when it’s all printed out and set up.
This activity is perfect for students in third and fourth grade but would also be suitable for higher second graders and even fifth graders whose skills are still developing. This is also a great activity for ELL students.
