Thank you for taking a look at my “color by vowel sound’ Halloween themed product. This fun & engaging packet includes ten kid-friendly black & white Halloween scenes ready to be colored by kindergarten through third grade literacy learners who are developing & refining their phonemic awareness. skills.. On each page students read individual words & listen for the vowel sound. Once the vowel sound is identified, they use the color code to color the space. The first five activity sheets focus on short & long vowel sounds, while the last five pages focus on other vowel combinations including:
/oo/ (both sounds)
PLEASE NOTE , Although the words to be identified in each picture are fairly simple, many of these words have a phonetically irregular spelling. This will challenge the students to sharpen their phonemic awareness. For instance:
was- “a” doesn't represent the /ā/ or /ă/ sound in this word… the middle sound is /ŭ/..
cry- “y” doesn't have its consonant sound in this word, but makes the /ī/ sound
from- “o” doesn't make the /ō/ or /ŏ/ sound in this word, but makes a /ŭ/ sound.
It has been my experience working as a reading tutor with students of all ages that the majority of the struggling readers 3rd grade and up do NOT possess the phonemic awareness skills necessary to take apart “word chunks” and blend individual phonemes together, which becomes readily apparent when it becomes necessary to decode multi-syllabic words in passages where using semantic and syntax cues combined with a large sight vocabulary will no longer result in accurate, fluent reading. It’s difficult to provide appropriate instructional experiences for these children because of their large sight vocabularies and compensating strategies they have gotten in the habit of using.…therefore, it is important that emergent and beginning readers develop a strong phonemic awareness base as they are developing and learning to use multiple reading cues. Providing these students with lots of opportunities to work with sounds and the letter combinations that can represent these sounds, challenging them with many ways to do their “Word Work” such as this “Color by Sound” will prepare our students with the Reading Foundational skills found in the Common Core State Standards necessary for continued success with the other ELA Common Core State Standards.
Not only that…coloring Halloween pictures by color code is FUN!!! Please take a look at the preview to see several examples of pages taken from this product-enjoy!
Please leave feedback for this product. I truly value the information I receive from my colleagues as I continue to design and create instructional materials.
