Students segment words into phonemes and match regular and irregular vowel sounds, fine tuning their phonemic awareness using Halloween vocabulary in this fun & engaging literacy game. This product includes:
• 81 word cards plus 14 “Trick or Treat” cards
-3 short vowel categories (9 words in each)
-3 long vowel categories (9 words in each)
-3 irregular vowel sound categories (9 words in each)
• an 8 X 11 game card which depicts a cute, character-filled Halloween scene- (to be copied and laminated for durability)-2 – 4 players each need an individual game card
• a 2 page instruction & suggestions sheet
• 3 optional recording sheets to be used to extend phonemic awareness and practice related spelling patterns with independent word work
To play the game, students take turns reading individual words, segmenting the sounds, and producing the isolated vowel sound, followed by locating a Halloween word with the same sound on the game board. If the student is successful in finding a word with the matching sound, s/he places the card on the board. Students may also choose a “Trick or Treat” card, which allows them to “steal” a word card from another player or take an extra turn. The first player to cover all of his or her words wins.
Optional recording sheets may be used following the game to reinforce the skills being used and/or as accountability “proof” to be handed in to the teacher.
Depending on the phonemic awareness level of your students segmenting and matching vowel sounds may need to be practiced during a guided reading lesson. Students tend to name letters instead of reproducing “sounds” when asked to name a vowel sound, and the WORDS IN THIS PRODUCT WILL PRESENT INSTRUCTIONAL CHALLENGES as they sharpen your students’ phonemic awareness. For instance, if a student chooses “what”, s/he needs to say /u/ . NOT “a”, is the vowel sound, or if s/he chooses “new” the vowel sound /oo/ needs to be pronounced and matched with the Halloween word “broom”.
