Use these bell ringer prompts to give students practice reading and analyzing poems quickly. Each handout requires students to provide theme topics, theme statements, and text support for their responses.
There are three poems and bell ringers that are perfect for Halloween (these could last one week or three weeks depending on how you use them). If desired, use the varying difficulty of the poems to differentiate for student abilities and needs.
Poems included follow:
Theme in Yellow by Carl Sandburg
The Apparition by John Donne
Haunted Houses by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Instructions for using the bell ringers and sample keys for each poem are provided in the resource. Furthermore, several suggestions are provided for using these handouts as other activities.
