Providing students the opportunity to make choices is a surprisingly effective motivator! Each of the problems on this Halloween-themed Tic-Tac-Toe requires the students to either write and solve an algebraic equation or a system of equations. This is a great way to keep them engaged and doing math on the days leading up to (or after) Halloween!
I encourage them to read through all of the problems prior to making their selection. This enables each student to choose the problems he/she feels most confident answering.
I generally use this as an in-class activity and I allow them one class period to begin the assignment and then they may finish at home, if necessary.
If you prefer to assign all nine problems, I’ve created a worksheet that includes all of the problems on the tic-tac-toe activity.
Writing and solving an algebraic equation in one variable.
Writing and solving a system of equations.
If students have not yet learned how to write and solve equations or systems of equations, they may use the Guess and Check method.
