This is a math/science activity that you can use with children around Halloween time (or anytime for that matter - all you need is a pumpkin!) The activity requires students to be investigators. It starts off with a letter from Jack O. Lantern. A portion of the letter is attached below:
Recently, a complaint was made by some surrounding farmers that a group of old ladies were growing a mysterious fruit very similar to what we call a pumpkin. Upon an initial investigation, we found that several hundred of this mysterious fruit were growing in a hidden patch of land just northwest of town. We have learned that this patch of land is being used by a group of ladies who belong to an organization named “Fairy Godmothers, Inc.” It seems that they are growing this fruit in great quantities in order to provide some sort of magical transportation.........
During the investigation of the pumpkin students work with circumference, measurements, conversions, counting, and making observations. At the end of the activity students are required to write a report of their findings.
