Looking for a way to take the fright out of the writing process? Grab a set of RPG dice (or a free online dice roll generator) and turn ANY writing lesson plan into a student-centered activity where work products get so good, it's scary!
What's an RPG Dice Roll Rumble?
The RPG Dice Roll Rumble turns any end-of-unit's essay writing lesson plan into an interactive “game” of high stakes dice rolling and collaborative pre-writing activities, featuring fully illustrated thematic checkpoints and team scorecards designed to model growth mindset while helping students develop comfort and confidence in their own writing.
Working in teams of 4-6, students will take part in a series of formative assessment checkpoints while drafting sample components of a traditional five paragraph essay, competing against rival squads while receiving immediate teacher feedback and earning higher dice rolls for higher quality work products at each stage of the game. Each new station is a chance to level up your skills and try again with a new prompt -- which means that everyone is working together to improve throughout the entire activity, and nobody's left in the starting blocks.
Great For Any Content Area
This fun, fast-paced “Rumble” is plug-and-play and ready to use for any subject area or grade level from grades 6-12, and can be used over several days of instruction to gives students a clear sense of how, where, and why each stage of their pre-writing process is most successful. No fancy devices or expensive apps required! Classes can complete this activity using anything from old-school pen and paper to a shared team laptop or 1-to-1 editing on student devices with Google Docs.
Best of all for educators, the activity's built-in teacher review and dice rolling checkpoint mechanics help ensure higher quality work products and sustained improvement over time. Immediate feedback helps student teams improve. And unlike a traditional game of classroom Jeopardy! where students spend countless minutes waiting their turn (and watching a rival team rack up a runaway victory) -- the RPG Dice Roll Rumble is designed so that *everybody* is playing the same game at the same time, and nobody is left on the bench watching their team fall behind on the scoreboard in the later stages of the game. This 2-4 day "Boss Battle" approach to essay writing ensures that teams have the chance to get right back in the game with multiple stages of close reading, writing, and scaffolded support as students work together to develop and refine end-of-unit essays. And with a themed scorecard and the luck of the dice to help keep tabs on each group's progress, it really is anybody’s game to win right up until the final work product has been submitted!
This resource has become a mainstay in my eleventh grade classroom, and the work products and enthusiasm that I'm seeing from my students since implementing this pedagogy have been nothing short of game-changing. The team-vs.-team approach to this activity helps the writing process feel exciting, fresh, and non-threatening, and the small group instructional design allows me more face time and faster feedback with students so I can float freely about the classroom and give them targeted support and encouragement as they develop their writing products.
