Description
Let's get you ready for Halloween with some STEM Challenges! This is a set of three activities that each uses a Halloween theme with pumpkins and spooky decor. But, each challenge can be used any time of year- just substitute with another object instead of pumpkins.
NOTE: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.
NOTE: The challenges are pictured as Halloween activities. Each challenge includes generic lab sheets to be adapted for any holiday or theme. Ideas for these are listed in the teacher's guides. You can also check the preview for ideas for alternative themes.
What are the challenges?
In Pumpkin Launchers students will design and build a launching device that will propel a piece of candy through the air and attempt to hit a target. The candy is your choice, but we used candy pumpkins. Students have some specific rules to follow in building the launching device and, of course, rules about launching the candy. The class will culminate with a target blasting opportunity for everyone!
In Haunted House Mazes students will design and build a maze featuring Halloween décor, a haunted house, spooky ghosts, and anything else related to the holiday they can create. The maze will be contained in a box, kids will use craft sticks to make the maze walls, and they must satisfy the constraints of the task with twists and turns and dead ends. Finally, they will be able to pick up the box and roll a marble or object through the maze paths.
In Pumpkin Elevators students will design and build a cranking elevator to lift items to the top of about a two-foot height. Students will work together to lift a fairly lightweight item and then a heavier item. The lifting system must make use of a turning handle that will wind the elevator system to the top and then release it back to the ground safely- without spilling or harming the cargo. You also have the option of not requiring the cranking system if this challenge needs to be a little easier.
