This is a really fun writing project for Halloween. Students brainstorm all of the wonderful things they could put into a stew made especially for Halloween. Students get very creative and imaginative as they think of all of the squishy, slimy, oozing, scaly, etc., things that would make good ingredients (I set some parameters on the grossness of ingredients, as some students can get a little carried away). Students have to attach amounts and measurements to their ingredients in order to include them in their recipes. Then they have to write specific directions for the preparation of their stew. I like students to include detailed instructions, for example, not just ‘add spider web’, but ‘dice 1 large spider web, sprinkle the web liberally into the stew and simmer for 5 minutes before adding the next ingredient.’ Students must also sequence the directions just like a real recipe.
