Dab to Show or Draw to Show
This subtraction activity is not only fun for the children, but great for a wall display. There are 9 different sheets and equation cards with the numbers 0-10. The cards can be printed on cardstock and laminated.
Each child will get a sheet and an equation card. They will illustrate the equation by using paint dabbers or crayons. You can either give the child the equation you want them to have or let them draw one out of the stack. You could also let them roll to dice to form their equation or spin a 9-0 spinner twice. Just make sure they know the larger number comes first. They will write their name on the first line, the minuend on the second line, and the subtrahend on the third line. Then they read the word problem to illustrate the problem. If using paint dabbers, the child will have to let it dry before adding any other features with crayons or markers. They may want to add facial features for the cat along with ears, a stem on a pumpkin, facial features for the ghost, owl & jack-o-lantern, eyes and wings for the bat and a iris for the eyeball. They will also need to wait for it to dry before they X out the amount of the subtrahend. It doesn’t take long for paint dabbers to dry. After illustrating the equation, the child will write the equation.
