What better way to celebrate Halloween than by reading “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe? This timeless gothic horror is just what you and your students need to get in the mood for Halloween and all things that go bump in the night!
These lesson plans include the poem, a study guide for individual or group work, summarization of the poem by stanzas and vocabulary PowerPoint presentations for elements of poetry arranged in the ExC-ELL format. A quiz/test is included with modifications noted by two asterisks (**) in the top left corner of the third and fourth pages. An answer key is included.
These activities are scaffolded and differentiated: teacher decides on groupings for analyzing the text, decides the extent to which summarized text is shared with special needs students. Teacher decides which elements of poetry on which to focus. Duration depends on teacher objectives: usually one to two class periods. An especially effective way to increase understanding is showing the YouTube video of “The Raven” Simpson’s episode along with the activities. Another good rendition is “The Raven” read by Christopher Walken, also on YouTube.com.
