Suggested Lesson Plan
VA SOL: Math 1.14 and 1.15
Objective: Create a tally chart from student created data,
create a bar chart based on a tally chart
-Watch the short video by BrainPOP Jr. to introduce tally charts and bar graphs
-Review with student that there is an election coming up soon in which the people of the United States will choose a new President. (Adapt based on the elections being held that years) Explain that each adult in the country will get one vote and that votes can be recorded on tally charts like in the video. Make sure to tell them that computers will tally the votes of the Presidential election because there will be too many to do it by hand
-Explain that they will be voting on something as a class and that they will use tally marks to record the votes and bar charts to organize the charts.
-Provide each student with a ballot to vote on a fun snack to be eaten at our Halloween Party (to be provided/made by the teacher)
-Place completed voting ballots on doc cam one at a time and record them on the tally chart. Have students help count votes by reading ballots.
-Once the tally chart is complete discuss the results using various forms of comaparrison (more than, less than, greatest, least, most)
-Have students use their tally charts to correctly complete their bar graphs.
Each student will need one ballot, one tally chart, and one bar graph. Document previews are not exact replicas of actual documents. For example there are lines on the tally chart and the ballots are formatted to print 2 to a page. The bar graph does not have a preview image as I could not convert the excel file to a jpg file.
