Writing can be difficult to teach. I have not mastered this but I think I have helped overcome some hurtles I have found. I start from scratch and slowly build writing skills. I noticed students in the past writing these long yet very boring stories. I have been able to have students create interesting stories that amaze me in the last few years. How? Take time to teach the students techniques and write short pieces or even just GREAT sentences.
GREAT WORD CHOICE=GREAT SENTENCES=GREAT PARAGRAPHS=GREAT STORY!
I spent the beginning of the year working on techniques. Each technique is included in the presentation piece of this product. You don’t have to teach it in detail but just expose them to the different strategies instead of “write a spooky story”. Give them tools to use in their writing tool box.
Students will use a di to roll to see key details their story will have: setting, character, problem, and story starter sentence.
The story is set up to be 3 paragraphs. Paragraph 1 is the beginning and it is spoon fed to them. I break down what each sentence will be about. An example would be, “Sentence two tell me what time of day it is but don’t use the word day or night.” I give hints they could use like is the moon or sun out? What sounds to hear? Birds chirping? Allow them to write this sentence and then share out before going to the next sentence. Sentence by sentence you will be amazed. Paragraph 2 and 3 have direction slides then allow them to work on their own. Enjoy and please message me if you have questions!
