Description

This Halloween creative writing activity will scaffold the writing process of story writing from brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing. This resource also offers a fun way to teach the elements of story writing: title, exposition, inciting incident, climax, falling action, and resolution. An engaging resource that motivates the most reluctant writers to write.

This resource features notebook templates that (when assembled) can be glued into students' notebooks, on cardstock, or displayed on a bulletin board under the Halloween Banner (included).

ITEMS INCLUDED:

  • Brainstorming Sheet
  • Planning Sheet (Story Map)
  • Draft Sheets x 2
  • Cover Sheets (option 1) that scaffold the structural elements x 20 featuring Halloween images – cute and not so cute
  • Cover Sheets (option 2) x 23 featuring just Halloween image prompts
  • Writing Sheets x 2 (placed below the cover sheet)
  • Peer-editing checklist
  • Self-editing checklists x 2
  • Teacher-marking rubric for teachers who love to assess every form of learning
  • Banner x 3 styles - reading ‘Happy Halloween’; ‘Halloween Spooky Stories’

ACTIVITY:

1. Students will brainstorm their story ideas on the Brainstorming Sheet. They will then use the story map planning sheet to map out their story ideas.

2. Students will then write their first draft referring to their story map. The draft templates are double-spaced to facilitate self-editing and peer-editing.

3. Students will publish their stories on the notebook templates. They assemble the completed writing interactive templates in their notebooks or on cardstock.

4. Teacher may use marking rubric as a means of informal assessment.

EVIDENCE OF LEARNING:

Students’ completed writing pieces may also be pinned onto a bulletin board under the Halloween banner. Think about what a spooky display this will create!

NOTE:

Review the elements of a plot and components of a fictional story prior to students writing their own stories. For lessons on using transition words, figurative language, dialogue and action to control pacing, refer to my unit on Narrative Writing that provides detailed explanation and elaboration.
