Use these engaging prompts to teach your students to add elaboration in their writing with a variety of specific concrete details. This activity is perfect for a center rotation in your writers workshop and can also be used as a whole class lesson.
Each task card provides a Halloween-themed topic sentence. Students must list three supporting details that could be used in a narrative, expository, or argumentative paragraph with that topic sentence. (Some writing prompts are also appropriate for students who don't celebrate Halloween.)
Instructions include these types of details:
• Sensory language (imagery)
• Facts & figures
• Figurative language
This resource includes a slideshow presentation to introduce the types of supporting details, including an example sentence for each type. You'll also get posters for display in a writing center, task cards, and an answer sheet.
Teach 150+ students? I've added a low ink version for a whole class assignment that doesn't require the task cards--just print a class set and have students write in their own notebooks or on looseleaf paper!
