PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Halloween Writing: Let your students’ imaginations run wild with this Halloween writing activity. Guided imagery and purposefully planned prewriting activities will help your students build effective writing techniques, gather oodles of descriptive details, and clearly sequence events.

This engaging Halloween writing activity guides students through the entire writing process. As they write descriptive narratives, students gain skills for Common Core State Standards W.3.3, W.4.3, and W.5.3 by establishing the setting, creating a clear sequence of events, using dialogue and descriptions, employing transitional words and phrases, choosing powerful words, and writing conclusions. The unit includes:

• Teacher Directions – Four pages of directions provide suggestions for guided imagery, prompts, correlations to Common Core State Standards, and general instructions.

• Student Planning Pages – Eight student planning pages will guide your students in using development of setting, plot, and characters, as well as writing dialogue and good beginnings.

• “Witchy Words” – This eight-page student thesaurus was specially designed for Halloween writing. When printed back-to-back on two sheets of paper and folded, it makes a handy guide to help your students with word choice, including specific nouns, lively adjectives, active verbs, sensory words, and figurative language.

• Themed Writing Paper – A lined sheet of paper with the Best-Dressed Witch hat at the top of the page is available to print for the students’ final drafts.

• Student Editing Checklist – Written in student-friendly terms, this comprehensive writing checklist may be used for editing during a writing conference with the teacher, with peers, or independently. It ties directly to this activity and Common Core State Standards narrative writing indicators.

• Rubric – Also written specifically for this activity, the rubric directly corresponds to the student editing checklist. Two versions are included, with and without listing of CCSS for each criterion.
