This is a perfect HALLOWEEN project for high school students that requires very little materials (can be done for cheap!) and that makes for an awesome final art display.
Students create a final portrait made out of hand-made STAMPS.
Students are asked to pick their own horror-inspired character on which to base their final stamp portraits. They can either grid it to enlarge it (I do them big on bristol board) OR you could always have them project it and trace.
Then they get creative, and design stamps to build VALUE so their final portrait is successful. They can use their fingers, erasers, whatever is available.
All that's required is:
-bristol board or large paper
-erasers for carving (OPTIONAL)
-Xacto knives to carve (OPTIONAL)
I've done this with photography classes, visual art classes, English classes - it's super flexible!
It's also great to do as a group project, since that way it gets them collaborating and it's a much faster process.
They create something amazing from something very little - it's cool to see.
