This classroom-tested activity plays with French phonetics and sentence structure. The first page contains six fun mini-poems with blanks to fill in rhyming words; the second has more mini-poems and focusses on connecting words and rhythm.
After this preparatory work, the third page encourages students to use their imaginations to come up with their own rhyming mini-poems, and then to draw sketches of their poems. Vocabulary is provided.
Before having them compose their own, I always start by having the class write a couple of collective poems, to show the thought process. Students love to share their creations orally; you could follow this up with an illustrated version for a class display.
This activity is appropriate for high-beginner level French at any grade level as long as students are able readers.
