For some reason, this is one of the more difficult skills for some students.
Going outside of the classroom may signal to some kids that it is a different
Environment and classroom rules do not apply. Or perhaps it is because
students are moving versus sitting and proximity to the teacher may be farther.
For some students it is the mere chance to see other students, have a “change
of scenery” and get a needed movement break. For all the previously
mentioned reasons, this is definitely a skill to practice at the start of school,
with frequent reminders. I often teach this skill using this lesson, then practice
in the classroom walking around in a line, and finally out in the hallway.
At the end of this lesson is a catchy song to teach your students as they line up.
Make sure they are demonstrating the actions. Also at the end are a group of
scenarios to check for comprehension of EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED hallway
behaviors. Video modeling tends to work extremely well for this skill. An
example would be to take a video of some good peer models walking
appropriately and show your students. Once your students have achieved this
skill, video tape them, show them the video and give them props!
