Thank you for downloading the Hamilton “Aaron Burr, Sir” and “My Shot” Characterization Lesson Plan. In this document you will find all you need for a one hour lesson exploring the characters of Hamilton, Burr, Laurens, Lafayette, and Mulligan through these two songs from the musical.
As a former History teacher and current English teacher, Hamilton hits all of my favorites parts of both subjects. These lessons explore the interdisciplinary nature of the play, but are mostly from the perspective of an English teacher. In “Aaron Burr, Sir” and “My Shot” we meet four additional characters who have a big impact on Alexander Hamilton. As it is the beginning of the show, we are still learning about Hamilton, too, but now get to see him in comparison with other young men of his age. This lesson focuses on characterization. Students will describe each character after reading the two songs and use quotes from the text to explain why they feel this way about them.
Lyrics: You can get lyrics to the musical in the book Hamilton: The Revolution (available on Amazon) or at www.Genuis.com (approved by Lin-Manuel Miranda and with some of his own annotations).
