This lesson includes student based activities that directly align with the song, "Who Tells Your Story?" from the incredibly popular, Hamilton Musical. Student interest is peaked when the power of music is brought into the classroom. Students use the lyrics to participate in close reading, historical analysis and vocabulary building skills. The lesson concludes with a creative epitaph activity honoring the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton. The lesson covers U.S. history content- including the Aaron Burr/Alexander Hamilton Duel and Hamilton's impact on the U.S. Treasury and disputes with Thomas Jefferson.
When doing close reading of the lyrics these strategies can be effective:
1)Teacher start by playing the song and students silently read along
2) As a class or in pairs students highlight main ideas, circle and define challenging vocabulary
3) Teacher guides the class in annotating historical references
