In this unit, student read William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The reading, which is mostly assigned at home with accompanying reading note assignments, is supported by in-class discussion (both whole-class and small-group), analysis of soliloquies, character discussion, viewing of scenes of the PBS Great Performances Hamlet, and various other activities. This unit also includes a practice multiple-choice passages from a past AP Lit exams (from a Shakespeare play) as well as three free response timed writes (one from a past AP Lit exam, and two teacher-created). Various support texts, both informational texts and poetry, provide additional background and discussion material. The unit includes directions to show clips from the PBS Great Performances Hamlet (this can be accessed for free online at http://video.pbs.org/video/1473795626/). Start and stop times in lesson plans always refer to this film. The unit focuses on close reading of short passages, usually soliloquies, for speaker’s complex tone. Unit assessment, then, includes a formal writing analysis of student’s choice of soliloquy from the play.
