This lesson on deus ex machina asks students to analyze Hamlet's escape at sea and judge it as either lazy writing or creative plot use. This lesson is paired with a video providing examples of deus ex machina in movies as well as detailed explanations of how deus ex machina can be lazy, or can be ironic. A teacher's guide with additional examples of deus ex machina is included. This lesson pairs well with Act IV, scene 6 or Act V, scene 2 of Hamlet.
