This progressive journaling activity puts students in Hamlet's shoes in order to introduce them to the main external/internal conflicts he faces, as well as to allow them to think about how they would react in the same situation.
Students go through a series of four short journal prompts and react as if they are faced with that situation themselves. This introduction activity gives students a basic foundation for the plot of the play and interests them in learning how it all unfolds. It also provides a springboard for rich class discussion on plot structure, external and internal conflict, plot twists, and how authors engage readers. Students always respond with strong emotion and eagerness to share their own personal reaction to Hamlet's plight.
