Looking for a fun activity that will challenge students and help them review for your unit exam? This two-page quotation race features 30 quotations taken from William Shakespeare’s classic tale, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. From main characters, such as Claudius and Polonius, to supporting cast members, such as Horatio and Marcellus, many roles are included on the worksheet. The answer key is here, too, of course.
Students can work solo on the handout, but it’s more fun to have them compete in teams of two. Using their copies of the play, their study notes, and their brains, students will complete the two-page worksheet matching characters to their lines from the play. The race alone usually takes 20 minutes of class time. You can turn this into a 45-minute activity by not only giving the Quote Race in class, but also going over the answers once all of the teams have submitted their papers. It’s a great review activity because the students love the scavenger hunt aspect of it. The team with the highest number of correct answers wins. In the case of a tie, the victor should be the team that submitted its sheet first, so there is a race element to the game.
