Included you will find a viewing guide for watching Shakespeare’s Hamlet and a chart for comparing Hamlet to Holden Caulfield along with a written response prompt asking students to compare the two characters.
I used these activities with my senior class. We read Catcher in the Rye first and focused a lot on Holden’s characterization and his interactions with others. Then we watched the 2009 version of Hamlet (though any version would work). Students used the viewing guide and No Fear Shakespeare text to take notes while they watched the movie.
I was not doing a Shakespeare study at the time, so we didn’t focus on anything else in the play than the character of Hamlet. Teachers could focus on Hamlet first instead of Catcher and then do this same written activity.
