IF COMING UP WITH
an interesting way to teach your 6-8 graders ancient history is difficult for you, look no further. This Hammurabi’s Code of Law Debate
is a project based activity for your collaborative groups that is enticing, challenging and fun. When you see your kids being actively engaged and truly enjoying their experience, it will help you to once again discover a joy of learning with them.
goes hand in hand with what is happening in our world today. Controversy over certain laws, the second amendment, equal rights, health care, etc. This hands on activity will help the kids to visualize what life was like during Hammurabi’s reign. A time when there were no laws, people were being ripped off and violent crimes were committed. In short, there was no justice.
came up with one of the first law codes to improve the well-being of mankind. The severity of his decrees bothered my 6th graders who were eager to debate their point of view.
IF YOU ALSO TEACH LANGUAGE ARTS
, the students will take notes and be required to pick at least 2-4 laws (more) if they want, and write an argumentative essay stating how they feel about them. This will keep them actively engaged during the debate.
INSTEAD OF JUST LECTURING
, reading a text, writing definitions or answering questions which is BORING
and will turn them off, they’ll have a good grasp of what they’re studying because they’ll be active rather than passive learners.
WE ALL KNOW THAT KIDS FORGET
what they’ve been taught soon after they’ve had their test. I’m positive these hands on activities will leave a lasting impression and be something they'll remember even after they’ve left your classroom.
☆EXPERTS KNOW that Debating will☆
☆Improve abstract thinking skills
☆Help build character.

sitting in history class, as a student, and being bored out of my mind. The teacher just lectured and all I could do was look at the clock and wish that I was some place else ANYPLACE
else! Needless to say I learned very little that year. I only began liking ancient history after I became a 6th grade teacher, years later, and vowed that I would make it come alive for my children. I didn't want them to go through what I did. That negative experience gave me the impetus to use PBL learning in most of my teaching and I’m so glad I did.
