This 3-page printable contains everything you need to introduce Hammurabi and his Code of Laws to your students.
The lesson starts with a brief introduction to who Hammurabi was, and also includes a few key images for students to view, including the stone monument which the laws were carved on, a close-up of the inscripted laws, and a map of Hammurabi's empire at the time the laws were introduced.
After the introduction, students can independently (or in small groups) read and consider five of Hammurabi's laws and re-write them in their own words. The students will then decide if they agree or disagree with the law, and why or why they chose that stance. Many of Hammurabi's laws were harsh (an "eye for an eye" mentality), and students usually are surprised by the examples within the activity, and it can make for a livey discussion if desired.
I hope you enjoy this printable. It can be used across a variety of grade levels, and can be used as a group or independent activity.
