A great assignment to review or teach Hammurabi's Code, also known as the Code of Hammurabi and Hammurabi's Law.
The assignment begins by having students look up the punishments Hammurabi gave for certain crimes. Students then reflect on the reasoning behind these rules. Finally, students create their own laws in small groups.
This activity helps solidify the purpose of Hammurabi's Code as a way to keep order in an increasingly-large society.
I have used this activity for every group from special education to Advanced Placement. The only adaptation I sometimes make it having them guess Hammurabi's punishments when the internet is not available.
