PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Hand-Me-Down-Tales From Around The World. It is the SECOND week in my Hand-Me-Down-Tales Unit.

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be analyzing folktales from 4 different continents. They will locate where each folktale originated on a World Map located in their student response booklet. They will also summarize each folktale and answer questions related to the text. At the end of the week, students will create a classroom quilt square illustrating key points from each folktale read.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
analyze folktales from around the world.
summarize folktales they have heard.
sketch a picture that illustrates the main points in a folktale.


Stories you will need are: (WORD documents of stories are included for duplication - Stories were in Public Domain)

Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky – originated in Africa
The Two Brothers and the White Bearded Old Man – originated in Europe
How Night Came originated in South America
The Four Dragons – originated in Asia

The lesson plan contains the following:

+Vocabulary Words for each folktale
+Technology Links- including video links
+Detailed plans for the week (6 pages)
+1 student response booklet template to copy for each student - the booklet is formatted to be printed front and back so that when you fold it all the pages line up. You don't have to print it as a book. You could copy it and cut the pages so that the students can paste them into their reading journals.


The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RL.2.2: Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

W.2.3: Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe action, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure. (Narrative Summary)

SL.2.4: Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences. (Culminating Activity)
