This is an assignment I wrote for a fashion class that had very minimum sewing experience. It was the final project for their hand sewing unit so we had already gone through basic sewing concepts (e.g. right side vs. wrong side, basic stitches, etc) and did a mini-hand sewing project prior to this assignment.
It took them a while, but the kids loved the final results! It reviews practical skills and they got to take home something they can use! Although I used this for my high school fashion class, I think younger grades can also do it.
You can modify the assignment to make a bigger product such as a purse, bag, pencil case, etc. At the end of the day, those modifications are really about size and shape.
What you will find in this package are:
- Step by step instructions on how to customize the length of a zipper (photos included)
- Step by step instructions on how to hand sew a lined zipper coin pouch (photos included)
- Two marking schemes (one for the process and one for the final product)
- A small reflection handout for students to complete
The assignment requires students to come see their teacher throughout the process for inspections. I found this helpful as it gives me an opportunity to review concepts (such as how to use an iron safely and how to properly pin fabric together), and to check their work.
You will need to customize this assignment slightly as I left some of my class' details in there. (E.g. a due date, zipper length, coin pouch size requirements, etc.) Modify them to the needs of your class! :)
