Know what a student wants as soon as they raise their hand- without calling on them! It is very frustrating when students raise their hand to ask to go to the bathroom or to get a Kleenex in the middle of a lesson. By using simple hand signals, you know if the student has to use the bathroom, get a Kleenex, or if a student has a question or needs help. Even better, you can send one student to the bathroom and one student to get a tissue without saying a word or interrupting your teaching!
The students raise 1 finger to go to the bathroom, 2 fingers to get a tissue (can be changed to leave your seat), and 3 fingers for help. If a student raises their entire hand, then I know they have a question. I've used this system with 1st, 5th, and 6th graders, and it's worked very well for me!
