Limit Interruptions With Non-Verbal Signals!
If you are like me, then there are few things more frustrating than being in the middle of a lesson and asking a carefully crafted question, only to have the first student that raises their hand, ask to go to the washroom. (sigh) I adapted this system of hand signals to help my students indicate their ongoing needs without needing to ask them out loud.
The premise is simple, teach your students to use these hand signals at all times. This helps to minimize interruptions during lessons, small-group work, student conferencing, group discussions, etc. With a simple nod (or shake!) of your head, you can attend to these needs without words, creating a quieter, happier classroom environment.
