I love reading and teaching Margaret Atwood's _The Handmaid's Tale_. Regrettably, rather than read the novel, I have found that many students opt to go online to SparkNotes (or the like) and read plot summaries. As such, I have created a series of General Reading Comprehension Quizzes for the first half (20 chapters) of the novel to keep students accountable for their reading (as well as to quickly assess if they have actually read the material).
By design, the answers to the majority of these questions are NOT found in online or store-bought study guides (e.g., Spark Notes). I intended them to be used as quick in-class assessment quizzes, and to evidence that students have done the required reading. As such, the questions are comprehension-based, and do not assess higher level thinking/reading skills. They are quick multiple choice questions (with a very few short answer questions) that I give out at the start of the class when the reading is due. Each Version contains a unique question for each chapter, so Version 1 (Chapters 1-20) contain twenty questions, and Version 2 (Chapters 1-20) contain a different set of twenty questions. There is an additional page of ten extra questions.
What Makes My _The Handmaid's Tale_ Reading Quizzes Different from others online:
1. There are two versions of each Quiz.
In my first few years, I taught in a room with round tables. Students were more likely to cheat, so I have included two versions of each quiz. On the top of each version is a subtle "V1" or "V2." I alternate the quizzes I give to students to prevent any cheating. (Alternatively, if you are teaching two classes, you may give one class V1 and the second class V2 to prevent any benefit from hallway-talk.)
2. My quizzes can easily be edited/altered to meet your needs:
The files you will download are zipped Microsoft Word files. I have kept it as a Word file so that you may alter/add/delete any questions you see fit. Each quiz, of course, comes with its accompanying Answer Key. The Answer Key includes page references for all questions, locating exactly where in the novel the answer may be located.
3. Quiz Bank of Questions:
While I have created short Chapter Quizzes, I have also included all the questions in Questions Bank, in a separate Word file. This way, should you want to make a quiz longer or short, or rearrange questions, you are free to do so.
This twenty-eight page Word file includes the following:
Quiz 1: Chapters 1 & 2 (two versions)
Quiz 2: Chapters 3 & 4 (two versions)
Quiz 3: Chapters 5 & 6 (two versions)
Quiz 4: Chapters 7 & 8 (two versions)
Quiz 5: Chapters 9 & 10 (two versions)
Quiz 6: Chapters 11 & 12 (two versions)
Quiz 7: Chapters 13 & 14 (two versions)
Quiz 8: Chapters 15 & 16 (two versions)
Quiz 9: Chapters 17 & 18 (two versions)
Quiz 10: Chapters 19 & 20 (two versions)
Three pages of ten extra questions.
