This is a three page handout that uses a poem by Emily Dickinson to help students find the tone, mood, and atmosphere in the poem. It allows multiple perspectives and can be used with students in pairs or in a group. If students do this handout, then class discussion of the poem should be enriched. My definition of tone is "the author's attitude towards the subject and the audience." Mood is the emotion of the piece and atmosphere is what creates the mood.
