This resource is a 16 page fully editable word document of the handouts I use for a 7-day Pointillism Landscape Painting (Watercolor) unit in my Intro to Visual Arts class at a high school in the Bronx, New York City. For this unit my students painted on a half sheet of watercolor paper (6inches by 9inches) so this unit could definitely be extended for a longer amount of time if you use a full sheet of 9x12 paper (which I have done in the past but requires students with more patience). I work in a district that doesn’t have Visual Arts classes in the middle schools, so this project could easily be adapted for a middle school level, or even adapted up for higher skilled high school students. This is a great project for students who have never painted before or don’t feel comfortable with watercolor paint yet. In this unit students learn the following artists and art vocabulary:
-Vincent Van Gogh
-Robert Duncanson + Antebellum Era
-Horizon, background, middleground, foreground
-Commission & Patron
-Comparing and Contrasting artists’ styles
Each handout includes a step by step drawing for the “do now” and space for notes, practice activities, and/or video questions.
The packet also includes the project rubric, quiz review sheet and the end of unit quiz.
See also my coordinating listing that has the powerpoints for this unit, which also includes photos of sample student projects.
